TRANSIT: Distillation
1337 PEEPS + DINOS + DRINKS + DATA + DISTILLATION
It’s Big Data Week!
Enter the secret VLT location and chill out on a Friday night. In honour of the power and potential of big data, join us and meet . . . new people, distill ideas, talk art + music and experience big data visualised.
Why TRANSIT?
There are plenty of events that focus on a particular subject area, which is awesome. However, there are barely any spaces that explore the intersection of different disciplines (tech, design, arts and more). TRANSIT is all about creating such a space to encourage collaboration, exploration and serendipity.
We’re all passionate, driven individuals, single-mindedly focused on the goals we set for ourselves and our organizations. We run super hard to achieve our vision. Sometimes, it’s just good to pause, smell the roses, and reenergize. Who knows? You might just find inspiration when you least expect it.
What to Expect
TRANSIT is intentionally minimally-structured to encourage exploration and serendipity. Interactions are centered around food, drinks, games, eclectic performances and attendees themselves.
The one intentional space we have is called DEBUT.
DEBUTs are a discipline-agnostic time for individual(s) to share something new. Whether it’s a new business idea, some music, or even a new community.
Snacks + caffeine + pizza + alcohol served till it all runs out.
As more details become available, these will be updated on the Facebook event page (link below).

Big Data: Strategy, Practice, and Research
In this session, speakers will share how they approach their data requirements from the perspective of what’s possible, what’s practical, and what’s scalable – and most importantly, what value results . . . from their initiatives. Lessons will be shared on how to effectively tackle big data, and forward-thinking ideas will be explored.
This is a cross-vertical event with a broad appeal. The talks were specially selected to cover three major themes: Strategy, Practice, and Research. The objective of this event is to create an agenda that cuts across the issues in a way that will create better awareness of all the necessary pieces to drive towards a successful Big Data initiative.
Anyone with an interest in Big Data will leave here with a deeper understanding of the issues and a broader view of the space, therefore the delegate profile would include the following:
* CIO/CTO/CMO/VPEng/PMO or anyone else in a management position who wants to see how a Big Data initiative will improve the performance of their organisations.
* Engineers and developers (everyone from apps to infrastructure) in enterprise or startups/freelancers who are looking for opportunities, as well as ideas on how to upskill strategically.
* Anyone with a Business Intelligence or Data Warehousing background who wants to see what comes next.
* Anyone who has been thinking to themselves “Big Data sounds important, but what is it exactly?”

Data Journalism: Storytelling in Malaysia with Big Data
There’s nothing new about basing journalism on reputable data. But now, data sets are getting massive and becoming more widely available through the Internet. Big data offers journalists a new resour . . .ce for telling stories, provided journalists can find the key facts and represent data in a way that still respects journalism codes of practice. In this panel we discuss emerging data journalism trends and how big data can be harnessed – reliably – for bringing relevant stories to the public.
We will cover the following focus points:
* How is big data changing journalism?
* Who is, or should be, involved with data journalism? Can anyone do it?
* What skills are needed to make data journalism the industry standard?
* What will be the wider societal effects of data journalism in Malaysia?
