Big health data, the challenges and connections
Perth is one of the cities taking part in the global ‘Big Data Week’ event and to support BDW iVEC, a national supercomputing facility based in Perth has planned a week-long program of events that . . . include presentations, networking opportunities and activities which will look at some of the challenges and opportunities presented by the growth of Big Data.
To start with the University of Western Australia, Curtin and Edith Cowan Universities will host a lunch-time series of presentations and demonstrations. Each event will be followed by lunch and discussions. These events are open to everyone from research, business, and community to share success stories, best practices, failures, cautionary tales, and future developments in big data.
This event will kicked off with a presentation entitled “Big health data, the challenges and connections”, presented by Dr Trish Williams – Senior Lecturer in the School of Computer and Security Science at ECU.
This presentation will be followed by a demonstration provided by Associate Professor James Boyd, Director of the Population Health Research Network (PHRN) Centre for Data Linkage. The PHRN a ground-breaking programme aimed at creating Australia’s first national data linkage network. For more information about the PHRN, please visit: www.phrn.org.au/
At this event, James will provide a demonstration of national data linkage infrastructure and tools which supporting research.

  Dark – The Movie
Showing in Horizon – the Planetarium at Scitech all throughout ‘Big Data Week’ will be the show ‘Dark’.
Dark is presented by Dr Alan Duffy, a brilliant young astronomer from the Internationa . . .l Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) at the University of Western Australia – who creates simulations of Dark Matter evolution using big data and supercomputers.
Dr Alan Duffy Alan introduces us to the idea of Dark Matter and why astronomers think it exists. The search for Dark Matter is the most pressing astrophysical problem of our time. At first hand, see how understanding Dark Matter will help us realise why the Universe is as it is, where it came from, and how it has evolved over billions of years. Visit the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) Telescope, in remote Western Australia. Discover why ASKAP is so well-suited to help astronomers discover the nature of Dark Matter.
For further details on how to get to Scitech and about the show go to http://www.scitech.org.au.
Available all week during ‘Big Data Week’, Monday 22nd until Sunday 28th April, Horizon – the Planetarium at Scitech.

  Georabble
GeoRabble is about celebrating the every day challenges and triumphs of working with location, technology, data or whatever gets your GeoRocks off.
We are a group of geo-obsessed people who want to ce . . .lebrate the real work done by other geo-obsessed people, unfiltered by professional bodies, government and private company agendas and industry politics.
Anything to do with GeoTech, GeoDev, GeoBusiness, GeoTrends, GeoFutures, – you name it, as long as you’re passionate and want to share your challenges, triumphs, frustrations and pride in the work that you do.
GeoRabble is here to connect, inspire and really have some fun with what is the coolest tech around – and if you don’t believe that, then GeoRabble is not for you.
GeoRabble Rules
The purpose of GeoRabble is to have fun, share and inspire. There are a few simple rules:
Celebrate each others’ triumphs
Respect each others’ choice – no technology bigotry
No sales pitches – this includes services, software, data etc.
No company logos or ‘about us’ slides
Keep it short – 10 minutes per talk

Rock, soil, water on the web – Linking geosample data on the Internet
The International Geosample Number (IGSN) assigns unique identifiers to geoscience samples and specimens.
The IGSN registry allows any geological sample data to be retrieved on the web, for correlatio . . .n of observations on samples published in scientific papers and reports.
IGSN promises to increase data integrity of earth sciences research. Presently several academic publishers are adapting their online publication systems to automatically link references to geosamples identified by IGSN.
Dr Jens Klump of GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam is the coordinator of the IGSN Implementation Organization, and is currently visiting CSIRO in Perth. Dr Klump will present on this work during big data week, at the CSIRO ARRC facility in Kensington, Perth.
This presentation is followed by a networking sundowner.
This event is open to all, however registration is required (for catering purposes).

  Big Data and iOS
While at first glance, Big Data doesn’t appear to have much in common with devices that only store a maximum of 64 GB, Big Data concepts and techniques have heavily influenced mobile development.
This . . . meetup will cover examples of using Big Data and related NoSQL technologies for mobile focused server components, as well as a demo of LevelDB (a Google BigTable-influenced embedded database) running on the iPhone.
