Controlling Complex Systems Using Big Data
WINFORMS, the Washington, DC chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science, presents its April meeting in conjunction with Big Data Week:
Robust automatic control is an ongoi . . .ng challenge with many applications. One example is predictive dialing in outbound telephone call centers, where estimating how long completed calls stay connected and synchronizing new call attempts to current service greatly increases productivity and reduces nuisance calls. Now it is possible, using current data-handling and computational capabilities, to do predictive dialing much more effectively and inexpensively utilizing Cloud computing, wherein massive simulation experiments that used to take weeks can now be conducted in less than a minute. These capabilities open up exciting new areas for R&D, with many applications, but also raise interesting questions about how to smooth performance.

Getting Started with Big Data Analytics
Getting started with Big Data Analytics can be a daunting task because of the complexities of the technologies and the fast evolution of the software ecosystem. This talk will expose analytics profess . . .ionals to established open source big data technologies and provide them with practical methods to prototype and develop big data analytics without requiring deep knowledge of software development or distributed computing. Come learn the secrets that hard core software developers don’t want you to know! The talk will cover
· An overview of Hadoop and Map Reduce
· Alternatives to writing Java code to develop analytics on Hadoop
· The big data analytic development lifecycle – How to go from data to insights
· A worked example using the principals we discussed
· How you can get started with big data technologies today

Natural Language Processing and Big Data
The Data Science DC Meetup presents its April meeting in conjunction with Big Data Week:
We have two presenters talking about their work with very different, very large text data sets. First, Ben Beng . . .fort from Unbound Concepts will be talking about how they use Python’s NLTK and Hadoop Streaming to make sense of their corpus of children’s literature. Then, Tom Rindflesch from the National Library of Medicine will talk about his group’s work building a system to help medical researchers keep up with the flood of current and historical articles published on PubMed.

Challenges of Visualizing and Exploring Big Data
Big Data DC is excited to participate in the global Big Data Week (http://bigdataweek.com/). We are very lucky to have Will Gorman, Chief Architect of Penthao, coming in from California to present to . . . our group. I’ve known Will for a long time and I’m sure the talk will be great. In addition to being a great software engineer Will is also an award winning LEGO designer. Hopefully he will share some of the secrets behind things like the model of Mars Curiosity he built in partnership with NASA (http://www.battlebricks.com/curiosity/).
Here is the abstract for Will’s talk:
Traditional visualization and data exploration tools struggle to deal with the many qualities that define big data. What visualizations are useful for exploring datasets that are orders of magnitude larger than the number of pixels on your computer screen? What data structures and algorithms are useful for exploring sparse, schemaless datasets? How do you deal with a petabyte of dirty data? How do you empower your business users so that they can explore this data? In this talk, we’ll discuss the algorithms, architectures, and solutions that address these scenarios. Will Gorman is the Chief Architect at Pentaho, a software company focused on building Big Data Analytics software.

  Big Data Breakfast
Big data is a hot topic and is set to be one of the fastest growing fields of 2013. But this is not news to the Maryland area; we already have an abundance of highly qualified big data practitioners. . . .So let’s bring all the experts together in one place and discuss where big data is going in the future. This breakfast is meant to be an open discussion among the big data gurus with suggested big data topics from the moderators – the Data Science MD co-organizers. We will also review the Maryland and DC contributions to Big Data Week. For those of you who do not consider yourselves big data experts yet, come, listen and learn. Or just come for the bagels, coffee and networking.
