Photo of Alex PhilpDr. Philp, Founder and President of GCS, IBM Champion, and Faculty Affiliate at the University of Montana, will provide an overview of the key factors driving the Big Data phenomena today, including an overview of the people, data, and technologies currently at the core of Big Data revolution. Dr. Philp will provide some examples of how Big Data is transforming specific industries, what this means in terms of innovation and how this translates into increased revenue and profitability. Examples from Health Care, Telecommunications, Energy and Security will be given and what the essential big data ingredients are.  Dr. Philp will discuss some cutting edge prototypes involving cognitive computing, what this means and why government, academia and industry should care as Big Data evolves.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Alex Philp, Ph.D., is Founder and President of GCS Research, an internationally recognized, award-winning leader in advanced geospatial information technology solutions, Founder and former CEO of Adelos, Inc., a world leader in advanced fiber optic sensor systems, and Founder and former CTO of TerraEchos, a big data analytics company. Through his work with these companies and as an IBM Champion, Alex has been instrumental in developing and implementing big data solutions using the IBM big data platform, especially InfoSphere Streams. He also worked closely with the faculty and administration at the University of Montana to launch the country’s first undergraduate course focused on big data.
