Look Who’s doing Big Data in Nova Scotia: Rob Warren, Big Data Institute, Dalhousie University

What kind of data is your company working with?
The Big Data Institute works with various types of data including multimedia, text and traditional transactional data.

What kinds of analytics is your company using?
The Big Data Institute is current working on analytics projects for Consumer Sales Analysis, Energy Efficiency and Recommender Systems. A high-end visualization system will be online in the summer of 2014 to better interpret the analytical results that are being produced by our researchers.

What are the problems your group is interested in solving?
Big data management and mining problems in the sales, transit, marine data, and all aspects relating to marine biology, fisheries and shipping.

How did you get involved in your line of work?
I’ve always enjoyed building things, taking things apart, math, history and reading – this is the place where I get to do these things every day.

What are you most proud of in your work?
All of the work that we do here is leading edge and has practical real world applications. Getting to work every morning and looking forward to working on problems that matter in novel and interesting ways.

What are the biggest challenges in your company’s line of analytics?
Finding enough time to work on all of the interesting challenges that there are to be solved!

What’s the best advice you can give someone interested in getting involved in a career in Big Data?
Find a problem that you think is interesting and try to solve it. If you are passionate about the problem, the rest will come to you.
